PAD Part 9

These hermit crabs were gathered to use for fishing. You smash the shells and pull the crab out, then remove this weird fleshy part to put on the hook.

They built this overhang in about an hour, it's for a ceremony that took place the next day.

All the dignitaries arriving from Vila for the aforementioned ceremony. A lot of ministers, PMs, and other important people flew in from Vila for about 6 hours to attend, celebrating the launching of a community partnership program to help maintain roads on Ambae (well really, the one road on Ambae...)

We took a trip up north to visit some family and stopped at Lombaha (the village just down the hill from Kathleen's site). When I go visit her, we often drink kava at the nakamal (kava bar) pictured on the left here.

My dad bought a giant tuna for 8000VT ($80), and then sold us these tuna steaks for 500VT ($5). One of the best meals I've had so far in Vanuat, and some of the best fish I've ever eaten.

There have been a lot of rainbows recently here. You can see Maewo in the background.

Sunrise over Maewo. My walk to work is kind of the best.

An important politico died in Vanuatu this week, so we had a small ceremony at the province, followed by kava (in the blue bucket). It was some of the best kava I've had so far in Vanuatu; very smooth and clean.

All the flags are at half-mast for the week.

Celebrating Vanuatu Independence Day up near Alison's site. Good food, good conversation, kava, and sports-watching.
